Welcome reader and, I make an assumption here, student. As you proceed through this book you will be exposed to many concepts; some new to you and some with my own personal spin on older ideas. Keep an open mind and you can gain from my experience in the real world. I intend to demonstrate what you can expect if you take a job in the industrial world.
I will start with my version of manufacturing history. I hated studying history in high school so you can be sure the history part of this book will be limited. I do believe a short discussion of history will help pave the way to the future I will describe later in the book.
I am not trying to write a textbook for a class. My intention is to provide some information that industrial technology instructors can use to support and apply the technical subjects they are teaching. I hope to show how these many varied technical subjects come together to produce the products we spend our money on as consumers. I will show the many opportunities that young people have for rewarding work and I will try to generate interest and enthusiasm in work that has provided a very good living for me for many years. I have never had a problem finding a job - I have had to choose between job offers. I will help you understand which jobs best match your personality and interests so you can avoid some mistakes I have made.
I expect instructors to pick and choose which parts of this book to assign and when in the course of instruction the sections are read. For this reason there is not much continuity through the chapters. I try to avoid (not always successfully) referencing “previous” chapters or subject matter so that each chapter stands alone. The two parts of the book have different focus. The first part explores the technology of industry while the second part looks into applications of that technology. The second part is the most fun for me because I get to give examples of how I solved problems and “saved the world.” I also explain the various troubleshooting styles I have used or observed and how to mix and match to create your personal style that will help you succeed.
